Monthly Book Roundup: January 2022

A Month In Books, Monthly Book Roundup January 2022

Hello fellow booklovers,

January was an incredibly book filled month for me, so I thought I’d highlight my entire month of reading with you all!

This January I got off to a great start and managed to read a whopping 14 books!!! Which amounted to 6,347 pages, 3 five star reviews and an average rating of 4.16 which I’m super pleased about.

Featured Book of The Month:

My Favourite read of January had to be Leslie Vedder’s phenomenal debut The Bone Spindle. It‘s an Indiana Jones meets Sleeping Beauty, gender switch retelling that I absolutely fell in love with. Fi and Shane (the treasure hunting dynamic duo) were both really engaging characters.

If you loved Sorcery of Thorns or Cinderela Is Dead then I definitely recommend checking this out

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

5 Star Spotlight:

Another five star read of January was Mariana Zapata’s From Lukov With Love which was recommended me as part of the 12 Challenge (12 book recs from 12 friends to read in the next 12 months) I’m taking part in on Bookstagram.

It’s a slowburn enemies to lovers sports romance which focuses on two rivial figure skaters who decide to team up for pairs skating. The chemistry between both characters (Jasmine and Ivan) is absolutely swoon-worthy, I definitely recommend this if enemies to lovers romances are your thing.

Honourable Mentions:

This was quite an enjoyable read, the bully aspect did throw me at first but I did enjoy the writing style and the tension was incredible as was all the drama and backstabbing!

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫/5

This was a fast paced and fun ghostly adventure with gorgeously atmospheric descriptions that were creepy enough for the setting but not too scary that I—a complete scaredy cat—would have to sleep with a light on!

I’d definitely recommend to fans of YA Horror or Ghost Adventures.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

One of my fictional obsessions over the past year has been Dark Academia and Victoria Lee’s newest release was one of the best I’ve read so far. It’s creepy, psychologically twisty and packed with haunting prose that I genuinely loved. The Occult Visuals and setting in an old (and possibly haunted) all girls boarding school really added to the dark academia aesthetic and helped keep the tone suitably spooky.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

This was an intricately woven and fabulously dark historical novel set in 1750s Paris, following the POV of three women—one of which happens to be the infamous Madame de Pompadour. I loved how Ann Mazzola cleverly blends real historical events (The Vanishing Children of Paris) with gothic elements to create a spine-chillingly atmospheric tale of obsession, illusion and social upheaval in 18th Century France.

If you love your historical fiction gothic, gritty and a little macabre but, with a hint of magical realism then you should definitely check this one out.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Adrienne Young’s newest YA follows a girl who takes up her place within her family of shady criminals trying to go legit. The Roth family gave me strong Peaky Blinders vibes which I loved and the forbidden, Romeo and Juliet style-romance was really compelling.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Set against the backdrop of a magical Belle Époque hotel, Hotel Magnifique is a gorgeously written YA fantasy with an expansive cast of eccentric and interesting characters that I really liked. If you enjoyed Caraval or The Night Circus then I definitely recommend checking this out.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫/5
