Monthly Book Roundup: April 2022

Updated: May 14, 2022

I’m back with another monthly roundup, sharing all the books I read (and loved) in April.

I did have a slightly busier so I’m really pleased that I managed to read 15 books this month! which amounts to 5,461 pages, an incredible 6 five star reads and an average rating of 4.47.

Featured Book of The Month:

April was a bit of a rom com month for me as I read so many wonderful romances, but one of the biggest standouts had to be Ali Hazelwood’s Love On The Brain (Out 23 Aug), her second STEM related romance that I absolutely loved!

It’s a sexy, steamy and delightfully swoony worthy, enemies to lovers/ sunshine grump romance that‘s full of humour and relatable characters I fell instantly in love with. Bee, our loveable, purple haired, Marie Curie obsessed protagonist was amazing and her emotional journey was utter perfection. I loved Levi (her love interest/ nemesis) who was an absolute cinnamon roll(honestly, Hazelwood has an incredible knack for writing the best male protagonists) and I adored Bee’s La Llorona loving assistant Rosío, who pretty much stole the show whenever she makes an appearance— I could read an entire series centred around her, she’s amazing!

Seriously, my words cannot do justice to amazing this is, so if you enjoyed The Love Hypothesis (even if only a little) then you simply must give this a read! Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

5 Star Spotlight:

Confessions was an absolutely incredible book, full of lighthearted humour that explores sex/body positivity, sex education and toxic relationships in such an informative and sensistive manner— it’s definitely gonna resonate with many people (particularly teens) who’s experiences are (or have ever been) similar to Monique’s.

I have have hope that Joya Goffney’s beautiful writing and Monique’s journey will empower, inspire and encourage those readers to seek help or a safe place to talk about it!

Honourable Mentions:

Though, primarily YA fantasy, Emily Thiede’s utterly thrilling debut with jam packed with swoon-worthy moments that fantasy romance lovers are going to absolutely love.

The World building was phenomenal and the prose gorgeously lush (and when it came to the food descriptions- utterly mouth watering.)

I loved the depth we get from our protagonis, Alessa and the chemistry she had with the sexy, cynical Dante was just fabulous!

I definitely recommend this to fans of The Kingdom of The Wicked, found family, forbidden romance or friends to lovers tropes—trust me, you’re not gonna want to miss this Serpent & Dove meets the Bodyguard, YA fantasy debut.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Kelly Barnhill‘s newest book is a fabulously fierce, original and unapologetically feminist novel which explores centuries of female rage, due to subjugation, violence and misogyny—that’s leads women to spontaneously transform into DRAGONS. I found this a relevant and timeless coming of age story that’s heartfelt, complex and utterly addictive.

I loved how atmospheric Barnhill’s prose was and the story telling was beautifully detailed, I loved every single newspaper clipping, diary entry and “classified” report which really adds depth to the narrative.

There’s incredible LGBTQ+rep and soo many wonderfuoh inspiring characters; Marla, Mrs. Gyzinska, and of course my favourite Beatrice who’s personality and fearlessness were an absolute joy to behold.

Overall, this is a powerfully moving and phenomenally feminist, queer coming of age story that I absolutely loved!

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

This was an incredible rom-com (and the follow up to It Happened One Summer) that I genuinely could put down.

I genuinely loved the first book in this series and loved both Hannah and Fox’s supporting roles in the first book, but I have to say-having read this I definitely feel that their romantic journey—which tackles the struggles of trust, intimacy and toxic masculinity— had more meaning, intensity and spice than Piper and Brendan’s arc, and has quickly become my favourite book in the Bellinger Sisters Duology.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

A hauntingly atmospheric and gothic infused YA fantasy that I literally didn’t want to put down. The world building is soo lush and Signa’s outdoorsy escapades had an ethereal dreamlike quality to them that I really enjoyed. The dynamics between Signa and Death were satisfyingly moody though it did give me Hades and Persephone vibes that I loved!

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫/5
